Skye carves her own slice of success

  • APM Warrnambool supported Skye through the Disability Employment Services program
  • After recently relocating to Cairns, Skye had difficulty locating stable accommodation and transport

Skye overcame her challenges after moving to a new town.

After relocating from Warrnambool (VIC) to Cairns (QLD), Skye reached out to her new local APM Employment Service steam for support to find work in her new hometown.

Skye was able to transfer APM sites and was looked after by her Employment Consultant Sandy in the Earlville office.

Skye was hoping to improve her life and the lives of her children by providing them with stable housing and income.

Having reliable transport was one of Skye’s main hindrances to finding ongoing work, Sandy began by helping Skye access NDIS transport services that are local to Cairns.

Whilst she was getting settled, Skye was staying at a friend’s house. Skye really wanted to become independent and had tried various roles in hospitality in the past, but she found they weren’t quite the right fit.

Skye enjoys interacting with others and working in customer facing roles, rather than being out the back in the kitchen not being able to talk to anyone.

Sandy and Skye worked on a marketing plan, making sure to highlight the importance of being able to interact with people.

Sandy reached out to Employer Account Manager Cindy, and together they were able to locate a position with a local Pizza Hut.

Skye would need her RSA certificate as part of the role, so Sandy arranged for her to complete her training before the interview.

She is loving her new position and has fun at work every day.

Skye’s message to APM: “Thanks to APM for not giving up”.

After thirteen-weeks of employment, Skye now supports other staff members by supervising and teaching them how to properly undertake tasks. She has her own unit and loves her newfound independence.
