Before joining APM Andrew felt he had lost his way

Andrew found his way, with some help from APM

Those impacted by long-term unemployment are worthy and deserving of the chance to not just return to work but return to work they’re passionate about.

Which makes Andrew’s story of success all the more heart-warming.

Andrew was unemployed for five years. He attempted to find work through nearly a dozen employment agencies without success.

When he walked through the doors of APM near the Perth suburb of Kwinana, that all changed.

Having spent several years without the support he needed to find a job; Andrew admitted he had seriously struggled: “Without the support I needed from the previous agencies, I was so disappointed and was struggling”

“I felt seriously let down and these struggles caused me to lose my way and possibly my life.”

Through APM’s Disability Employment Services program, Andrew got the support he needed, with the help of his dedicated Employment Consultant Alana.

In considering what he might like to do for work, Andrew drew on some of the skills from his previous training in frontline management and allied health therapy, expressing a keen interest to do some form of work as a carer.

Although initially apprehensive he always attended his required appointments where he gained help with building resilience, interview preparation and becoming job ready.

Andrew accepted the chance at completing a Certificate III in Individual Support, with support from Alana.

He did have some initial hesitations but gave it his all to successfully complete the course.

As part of his certificate training, Andrew did work experience at Ignite Community Network – who then decided to hire him into their team!

Now, Andrew is working as a carer supporting difficult and high needs clients and building beautiful relationships every day, fulfilling his career dream.

And in his own words, “loving every minute of it!”

“I would never had got this far without the help I received from the staff at APM.”
