Lawrence is a proud Indigenous man who had been supported by APM since he reached out
In early 2020, Lawrence met with Employment Consultant Tammy at the APM Innisfail office in Queensland.
He was frustrated at the difficulties he had experienced in trying to locate employment to support his family.
Knowing that Lawrence’s priority was his family, Tammy was motivated to change Lawrence’s outlook on locating employment.
She took the time to listen to him regarding his culture and family commitments.
This empathy and respect for his values was how Tammy built rapport and trust.
Tammy was able to assist Lawrence in securing a role as a Traffic Controller through the Disability Employment Services program.
As neared his 26-week milestone, she saw signs he was struggling to maintain an effective work/life balance.
Due to a combination of Sorry Business commitments and losing his license, Lawrence unfortunately lost his job.
When Lawrence’s confidence and mental health was at an all-time low, Tammy leapt into action and assisted Lawrence in regaining his driver’s license.
She also ensured that after each face-to-face appointment that she had with him finished with positive reinforcement and encouragement.
Lawrence was able to attain a restricted driver’s license, for work purposes only, which was a great start to building up his confidence.
Tammy referred Lawrence to Back to Work services, who helped to support and improve his mental health.
“I discussed with Lawrence that it’s OK to have setbacks and make mistakes” Tammy said.
“To learn and then make small positive steps forward instead of giving up.”
APM assisted in lowering his benchmark hours from 30 so that Lawrence was able to balance his work, family along with practicing his cultural and religious beliefs.
The support Lawrence received to balance his commitments helped him secure a new role as a Traffic Controller with Altus Traffic.
“I make sure I give him his feedback” Tammy added.
“I am very proud of how far Lawrence has come, he will be a great example to his family his children and his people.”
As he reached his 13-week milestone, he visited the APM Innisfail office with his family to thank Tammy in person for her ongoing support.
Lawrence has now passed 26 weeks in his role and is looking towards hi 52-week milestone.
