Carers, retail and driving jobs in demand

Child carers, retail workers and receptionists are the top three in demand job roles in Australia this month, according to a new employment survey.

According to the Jobs in Demand Employer Survey, almost a quarter (22.9%) of employers are currently looking to hire new employees, despite rising unemployment levels due to the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Other in demand roles include truck drivers, managers, sales reps and dental assistants.

Trade jobs including metal fabricators, welders, machinists and mechanics also made the list.

The Australian Government’s National Skills Commission carried out the survey of 2225 employers in industries likely to be experiencing a high demand for goods and services.

The employers were contacted between 8 June and 3 July to share their current business circumstances.

Across the businesses of the 2,225 employers who took part in the survey, there were 1,839 vacant positions.

The survey also showed that more than half of employers currently hiring, said they were having difficulty filling the positions dues to a lack of applicants.

When asked about the skills and qualifications needed to fill the roles, the survey revealed most roles required no formal qualifications. Around 20% needed a Certificate III qualification and 10% needed a driver’s licence.
