Finding the right fit was worth the work
Terrence’s journey with APM began in October 2020, when he approached the team at APM Blacktown, located about 40 minutes west of Sydney.
He wanted to break out of unemployment, having struggled with frequent migraine issues. His return to the workforce was motivated by his desire to support his five children.
Terrence was hoping to locate employment close to his house, with enough flexibility to accommodate for his family commitments.
Specifically, he discussed his desire to obtain a driving role as he believed he would be able to manage his medical condition best whilst undertaking this line of work.
Migraines do not cause any safety concerns unless the person decides to drive (or undertake a task which requires a high level of focus) during a migraine ‘attack’, or if the medication used to treat their condition has a significant impact to perform such tasks safely.
His Employment Consultant Karam took Terrence’s requests into consideration and worked hard to share suitable jobs with him.
“I ensured that I consistently checked in with Terrence when we started working together” Karam said.
"2020 was a tough year and I wanted to do what I could to support his wellbeing.”
After not too long, Karam was able to arrange a paid work trial with a local employer for a delivery driver position.
After completing his paid work trial, employer Cheetah Transport was impressed with Terrence’s work ethic and he successfully gained a permanent part-time role!
His new role was the idea mix of his interests and skills which took into consideration his requirement for flexibility.
As part of APM’s post-placement support, Karam continued to check in with Terrence and Cheetah Transport.
“I worked with Terrence and his employer on communication techniques and helped them find the right style to work well with each other” Karam said.
“It was a big change getting back into routine” Terrance said “Karam has been a great support and supporter of me.”
APM was able to provide further supports for Terrence to ease him back into employment, including clothing and fuel cards.
After reaching a thirteen-week milestone, Terrence is no longer on income support payments and, along with Cheetah Transport is working hard to secure his future.
