The NEIS program provides free training and support to help people who are not currently working to start their very own business.

If you’d like to start your own business and you’re thinking about applying to NEIS, keep in mind that your business idea needs to be commercially viable. 

You’ll need to show there is a potential demand for your product or service.

Here are a hints and tips to help maximise your chances of being accepted to receive NEIS training and support:

  1. The first thing you should do is fill out your application form completely. Believe it or not, we see a lot of NEIS application forms that are not filled out entirely. Do not leave anything blank – particularly in the summary of your business idea. Leaving anything unanswered on your application form may give the impression that you have not researched – or at least thought about – how your business will be a success.
  2. Research your market. Demonstrate that you have done some investigation into your market.  What do you know about your industry?  What do you know about your competition?  Who is your target customer and what do you know about them?  How have you tested that your product or service will be attractive to your target customer?
  3. Is your product or service idea better or different to other ideas on the market, or does it meet an unmet need? Does your area lack the service or product that you can provide? Show how your business will enhance the community, or if you are offering a service that already exists, describe how you will provide a service that is better or different to other existing services.
  4. In addition to submitting a good business idea, your enthusiasm, perseverance and attitude are also taken into account. We need to ensure you have the right mindset to run your own business.  Make sure you show positivity and passion for your business idea when you attend your NEIS interview.
