Healthcare and support worker roles, hotel and food services personnel, and educational trainers will be the most in-demand jobs for the next five years in Australia.
The latest Industry Employment Projections from the National Skills Commission suggests employment will grow in several sectors.
The report, which gives an outlook on jobs up to November 2025, says four key industries will provide more than 64 per cent of employment growth:
- Healthcare and social assistance
- Accommodation and food services
- Professional, scientific and technical services
- Education and training
Each year, the National Skills Commission produces the projections by industry, occupation, skill level and region for the next five years.
These projections offer a guide to the future of the labour market and what roles job seekers can consider applying or preparing for in their path to sustainable employment.
Coming back from COVID
Although the projections cannot predict the full impact of major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest figures suggest several labour markets have already started to see signs of recovery for Australian job seekers.
Healthcare and social assistance
The report says healthcare and social assistance jobs will likely increase dure to greater demand and investment, including roles in child care and support workers for older Australians.
“Growth is supported by continued investment in public healthcare at the state and federal levels along with ongoing demand generated by the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
“Increasing demand for childcare and Australia’s ageing population also contribute to this strong projected growth, with employment in this industry having been relatively resilient to the impacts of COVID-19.”
Accommodation and food services
Despite many job losses in hotels, restaurants and cafes, the report suggests employers and job seekers can expect the accommodation and food services industry to bounce back strongly as more Australians travel domestically and international tourists start to return.
“Employment has already made a strong recovery in some sectors within the industry, with pubs, taverns and bars exceeding its February 2020 seasonally adjusted level in November 2020.”
Professional, scientific and technical services
A growing demand for educated workers throughout the economy is expected to drive more jobs in this industry.
Computer, engineering and legal-based roles are expected to increase.
This growth also creates more opportunities for administration, office support and other workplace roles job seekers may consider.
Education and training
Jobs in universities may take a while to recover as overseas students return slowly, but further opportunities come with local training.
A larger population of school leavers and a growing demand for more adult and community education is expected to drive more jobs in this industry.
Other areas to look out for
Employment in the construction industry is expected to grow following a surge in housing development approvals and more government investment in infrastructure.
Retail is also expected to provide opportunities for jobs. Although department store roles are expected to fall, other retail jobs are expected to increase, along with non-store based employment.
After a growth during COVID-19 with the increasing of online shopping and home delivery services, transport, postal and warehousing jobs are expected to remain strong over the next five years too.
