How to get started with APM

There are two ways to get started with APM:

  • Register directly with APM by calling us or filling out a registration form.
  • Get a referral to APM from Centrelink.

When you visit Centrelink, they’ll carry out an employment assessment. If you’re eligible for Disability Employment Services, Centrelink will recommend you to a provider in your local area.

You can choose your provider - which means you can ask your Centrelink officer to join APM.

If you’re already receiving an income support payment or the disability pension – or if you’re an NDIS participant – you can register directly with APM.

Simply fill out the registration form or call us on 1800 276 276.

Switching to APM from another provider

We understand that it’s important to find a team that works for you.

If you’re currently with another provider but want to switch to APM, you can call 1800 276 276. Our consultants will be able to help you switch providers.

Our consultants can also help if you were previously with APM, switched to another provider and would like to switch back to APM.

What to expect from your APM call back

After you fill out a registration form or request a call back from APM, we’ll give you a call within the next couple of business days.

During the call, we’ll discuss your situation and whether you’re eligible for Disability Employment Services.

If you’re eligible, we’ll talk you through the next steps.

If you’re not eligible for Disability Employment Services, we can help connect you with other supports and services that are a better fit for your situation.

Your first meeting with an APM Employment Consultant

If you’re eligible for Disability Employment Services, we’ll invite you to meet in person with a dedicated employment consultant at your nearest APM office.

Your employment consultant will get to know your situation and your employment goals. Then they’ll work closely with you to create an individual employment plan.

We might talk to you about things like:

  • Your obligations as a participant of Disability Employment Services
  • Our obligations as a provider of Disability Employment Services
  • Your skills, interests and ambitions about work
  • How many hours you can work in a week
  • Preparing your resume
  • Filling out work connect forms
  • Barriers you might be facing finding work

Your employment consultant can answer any questions you might have about the Disability Employment Services program. They can also talk to you about available government and community services in your area.

At the end of the meeting, your employment consultant will arrange a time to contact you again. Usually, we’ll be in touch with you weekly for the first four weeks.

Your individual employment plan

Your employment plan is the steps you and your employment consultant will take to work towards your employment goals.

This could include things like:

  • Building employment skills to get you ready for the workplace
  • Writing or editing your resume and cover letter
  • Searching for suitable job opportunities
  • Practising interview techniques
  • Accessing workplace accommodations or special equipment
  • Accessing mental health services or other support services
  • Accessing funding for things like transport and uniform costs
  • Participating in volunteer work trials

Finding a job with APM

Whether you’re looking for your first job or hoping to get back to work after some time away, your employment consultant will work with you to find job opportunities that are right for you.

They can also help you access support like financial assistance, mental health services and employment skills training to help you overcome barriers you might be facing when looking for work.

Your employment consultant can help you develop a strong resume, write compelling job applications and prepare for interviews. They’ll also help you connect with and communicate your needs to employers.

We’ll be with you every step of the way – including helping you prepare for your first day and learn the ropes in your new role.

Even after you get a job, we’ll be there if you need support in your new workplace – whether that’s ongoing support or a helping hand while you make the transition.
