How rolling burritos helped Kelsey get back on top
Next time you tuck into one of the treats at Guzman Y Gomez, you might be tasting Kelsey’s handiwork.
She’s one of many young workers who have felt the challenges of finding work and getting back into routine.
“It was hard to get a call back from people, because I didn’t have too much experience, and there were some big gaps where I wasn’t able to work” Kelsey said
While living with anxiety and depression can make day-to-day life unpredictable, Kelsey has found a role which she thrives in
Not only has Kelsey got her foot in the door at Guzman Y Gomez, she’s just on a roll – and according to her Manager Craig, she’s one of their fastest burrito rollers in the business!
"APM really helped me succeed and pushed me beyond my limits"
Finding the right support
Kelsey is one of the many young people with disabilities who have become part of the great culture in many workplaces like Guzman Y Gomez.
Through the Disability Employment Services program, she was supported all the way through the job-seeking and interview process by a dedicated Employment Consultant at APM.
As part of the program Kelsey received support to build her confidence and was able to find a role which suited her capacity.
“(My consultant) understood my limitations of getting back into work after not working for so long, I wasn’t thrown in the deep end or given hours I wasn’t able to handle or be able to cope with.”
When she started, Kelsey said she still felt a little nervous “it was quite scary, but everyone was really nice and friendly - it was nice to be given that chance and have the help and support I needed.”
Her Manager Craig praised her work ethic: “She really stood out, right from the get-go” he said “Kelsey’s intensity and determination to be successful here was evident from the start”
“It’s important that a person with a disability brings diversity and a reflection of who we are as a society and they come with some credible skills as well as anybody else.”
"I feel like it has had a real positive effect on the rest of my life"
More than a job
Having a job is so much more valuable than the income to Kelsey. Her hard work has seen her become a permanent employee at Guzman Y Gomez!
It’s had such a positive impact, those around her are noticing her blossom
“My family have all said they’ve noticed a massive difference and I’m getting more involved with family events and other things now”
“I feel really good about myself and I know I can do the things I previously struggled to think I would ever be able to” she said
Doing the hard work to overcome her anxieties and maintain her well-being has paid off for Kelsey, and she is happier and more connected with the world around her.
“It’s definitely helped to put me in a routine and get into contact with people and I have a very good social network now“ she said
“I’m not so scared about the future; I’m excited to move forward and see where things take me”
