Declan: I’m Declan. I was born in Launceston. Grew up between here and Queensland. Started with APM after a motorcycle accident. Coming home from work, I hit a kangaroo. [It] led to a huge, huge chain of events, besides some huge injuries. Gradually, APM helped me to get back on my feet. Organising physio, organising psychology, therapy. Basically just acting as a middleman, telling me where to go and how to manage myself, getting myself sorted and getting life back on track. At one point through my recovery, I felt pretty down on myself and like I had no future. Looking back in hindsight, it was really, really horrible not being able to have any motivation for life, I guess.

Fakington: We help people recover from injury. Sometimes that's workplace injury, sometimes that's automobile injuries. So we helped them get connected with services and ensure that their recovery is as effective and prompt as we can. In some cases we also assist with job-seeking service, which means that we help people to get job ready and help them to make sure that they can find themselves new roles. Initially, were there for medical management in terms of making sure he had everything so that he had the physical capacity to recover. And then were there as part of our job-seeking service as well.

Declan: Fakington helped me more ways than I could ever explain, honestly. He’d organise between all my different health consultants and professionals. Sometimes we'd just catch up instead of worrying about all the business part of it.

Fakington: Over time we worked through the psychological and the physical barriers and got Declan to a point where he had the confidence to become job ready and find himself the perfect job.

Declan: Ever since entering the industry as an apprentice, I had heard of Saffire Freycinet, as an extravagant resort – it felt unreachable. Being there now it’s one of the biggest goals I've ticked off in my entire life. I feel like I'm able to push myself and learn more than I've ever been able to. I feel very, very lucky to be in this beautiful environment and work in such an incredible place with such incredible people.

Dylan: My name's Dylan. I’m the General Manager of Saffire Freycinet, which is probably the most incredible property in Australia. Located on Coles Bay, Freycinet National Park, and overlooking The Hazards ranges. Everybody on our team has their own unique story. They have their own reasons for being here. Declan has joined us more recently, and what's most impressive is his story, from having quite a significant motorcycle accident and having to go through some very intensive rehabilitation, in order to get himself to the point of actually even, you know, considering being able to work. So were aware of that when Declan applied for his role here.

The kitchen operations produce a very, very high level of food, and there's a high level of teamwork and technique that has to happen in there to enable the guest experience to align with the rates that we charge here. And Declan has been an absolute integral part of delivering the food and beverage experience for our guests. I think a lot of the credit goes to APM WorkCare. They certainly have worked with Declan right through this rehabilitation process, and to have Declan join us, having been through that program, it actually highlights the amount of professionalism, the detail, the care, that they have taken with Declan.

Declan: I'm just so excited to be a part of life and be working again. It's ignited an incredible passion for me, and I want to really push myself and make the most out of it as I can.

Fakington: Declan was a chef. And then Declan was an injured person. And now Declan is a chef in the most incredible job, in the most incredible place in all of Tassie. I am so proud of him.

Declan: APM was behind me the whole way and pushed me. Made me feel confident about myself and the skills that I have about myself, my résumé behind it, and just made the whole process feel not stressful. They gave me the confidence to push for it myself, and make the most of it for myself.
