Nariah - Cleanaway transcript

Nariah: If it wasn't for the programme, I wouldn't have hit one of my main goals in life and that's truck driving. So I've definitely done it and yeah, it's the best thing that's happened to me. Hey, I'm Nariah. I'm 22 years old and I'm from Narooma. I operate heavy trucks with Cleanaway.

Christine: So when I first met Nariah, she was very anxious and, struggling financially. So we just got to know each other and talk about her aspirations of driving a big truck.

Gavin: There is a few qualifications that you need to get before you can come on board with Cleanaway. Such as heavy vehicle drivers licence. That can be quite challenging for the younger generation I would call it.

Nariah: APM was actually able to pay for the whole licence. Help me with my uniform, which was fantastic.

Gavin: She settled in very professionally. The way that Nariah strives to drive and wants to learn, it's been a great fit for Cleanaway.

Nariah: Probably the main thing is people coming up to me and you know, congratulating me on being a female in the industry and pushing through that hard factor of a male dominant area. So it brought me out of my shell really. Into the future, I would like to progress through Cleanaway and hopefully move into the mines with the Cleanaway company, and I'm willing to do what it takes to get to that. She's definitely a role model to me and she's helped me through a pretty well hard point in my life and come out on the other end good.

Christine: Supporting the youth in our community is not just about finding them employment. It's about changing the way they think about the world and something that they would never have thought of is achievable, can be achievable if we just find the right path and nut it out for where they want to go.
