Tansy’s working on a dream teaching career

When Tansy was just three weeks old, a stroke damaged the left hemisphere of her brain. The lasting impact meant Tansy grew up with the restricted use of her right eye, arm and leg.

Unfortunately, Tansy said some employers were only able to employ her for the duration of a six-month wage subsidy for hiring a person with disability.

Leaving Tansy unemployed and struggling to find another employer who would give her a chance.

Finding her dream job

For the children at Lucknow Primary School, where APM helped Tansy find her dream job of working in a library, Tansy was the indispensable, friendly guide to every entertaining and educational book waiting for them.

"My favourite thing about coming to work is being able to interact with the students and parting knowledge of how to use a library,” Tansy said.

Like APM, the children and teachers at the school saw Tansy for the person she is.

Tansy told her APM employment consultant her dream was to work in a library, and after a six-month trial as a technician, the school were not going to let her go.

“I really put my all in those six months. I got called into the office and they basically said they are going to keep me. And I knew I was having a job so that was brilliant,” Tansy said.

"My favourite thing about coming to work is being able to interact with the students and parting knowledge."

More than just a job

Building on the success in her role as a library technician, Tansy is now training to become a teacher herself, with the support from the school and APM to help her achieve a teaching degree.

You may be eligible for our Disability Employment Services program if you:

Have a diagnosed injury, illness or disability
Are aged from at least 14 to pension age
Are at or above the minimum legal working age in your state or territory
Are able to work at least eight hours per week (with support when required)
Are an Australian resident
Are not studying full time (unless you’re an eligible school leaver)
Are not working at or above your assessed employment capacity

You can access APM Disability Employment Services through a referral by Centrelink or by registering with us directly.

When you visit Centrelink, they carry out an employment assessment and if you are eligible, they will recommend you to a Disability Employment Services provider. Remember to ask to join APM so you get the best service when searching for employment.

How does Disability Employment Services work?

Disability Employment Services (DES) is an initiative by the Australian Government to help people with an injury, illness or disability find and keep a job.

This can include helping people to:

manage health issues that may be making it hard to get work
identifying their strengths and work capabilities
developing skills for jobs and being part of a workplace
succeed when they start a new job with further information and support

APM is Australia’s largest contracted provider of Disability Employment Services and we deliver support programs to eligible people across the country.

Who qualifies for Disability Employment Services?

You don’t have to have a physical disability to qualify for Disability Employment Services.

If you have a physical or mental health condition that limits your capacity to perform a job, you may be eligible to join the program.

We help thousands of people living with a range of short-term, long-term or permanent health conditions, find work every year.

You may be eligible if you:

have a diagnosed injury, illness or disability
are an Australian resident aged from at least 14 to pension age
are able to work at least eight hours per week

When you register with APM for Disability Employment Services, we will contact you to confirm your eligibility and invite you for your first appointment.

You will get a local employment consultant who knows the employers, businesses and job opportunities near you.

They will listen to you and build a plan that takes into account your health, personal circumstances, interests and any skills or experience you may have.

Your plan will be unique to you and include steps to help with:

building your confidence
writing your resume and job applications
searching for suitable jobs with potential employers
preparing for interviews
access to services to manage health issues or barriers to work
