Support gives Colby confidence to learn and earn

When Colby Morphett lost his father a few years ago, he made the brave decision to leave Victoria and move to Gladstone to be closer to his mother and start anew.

Leaving behind his beloved Harley motorcycle collection was tough, and adjusting to a new place while seeking employment proved challenging.

Colby, who lives with an intellectual disability and struggles with literacy and numeracy, found it difficult to secure a driver’s licence, relying on his bike for transportation.

This limited his job opportunities.

“I was just sitting around at home most days,” Colby shared with Gladstone Today, until his housemate told him about Advanced Personal Management (APM).

In March 2022, Colby joined the Disability Employment Services (DES) program at APM Gladstone.

Although eager to work, he was initially unsure of his career path.

The APM team helped Colby identify his interests and strengths, exploring various employment options.

When team member Robyn suggested trolley collection, Colby was enthusiastic. With his employment consultant’s assistance, he applied for suitable roles.

APM supported Colby in enrolling in and completing the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program, enhancing his reading, writing, maths, and computer skills.

They also helped him purchase a lock and lights for his bicycle, ensuring safe travel to and from work.

Colby’s dedication paid off when he secured a trolley collector role with Woolworths in Gladstone Valley and Kmart.

“I don’t like working in the rain much, but not really complaining about it,” Colby said.

“You meet a heap of people each day, and I do about five shifts a week now – sometimes at Kmart and sometimes down at the valley.”

With his earnings, Colby bought a car and is looking forward to getting his licence.

His APM team also provided knee braces and sun-safe clothing for his outdoor work.

APM praised Colby as a reliable and hard worker, grateful for the support he receives.

Since starting his job, Colby’s confidence and self-esteem have soared. His story is particularly special to APM Gladstone, as every employment consultant at the site has had the pleasure of assisting him at least once.
