Why DES is more than just finding someone a job

Real success is the change Disability Employment Services can bring

Seeing participants of Disability Employment Services (DES) transform from job seekers into happy employees in a job they love is one of the reasons Samantha loves her role with APM Employment Services.

“I do what I do because I love watching people go to work,” Samantha said.

“I love that journey of when they first come in the door and they’re a little bit down and not sure what to do and they might not believe they’re worthy – and to see them shine.”

As part of a team that helps thousands of people with disability, injury, or health conditions to find, prepare and stay in work every year, Samantha understands the importance of providing each person with a tailored service.

As well as the importance of understanding the requirements of each employer’s business and the potential a new employee can bring.

“As an employment consultant, we need to be resilient and tough, but we need to be compassionate and kind and caring.”

“Our job seekers are generally very vulnerable, and they’ve been through a lot,” she said.

With Samantha’s support, DES participant Darren overcame mental health challenges and long-term unemployment to start a new career in an unexpected industry.

Previously looking for a quiet data-entry role, Darren has instead found success as a team member at his local McDonald’s restaurant.

It was working with Samantha to boost his confidence, realise his skills and consider new roles that helped Darren secure the employment.

“When he now opens the door to our office, he just greets everyone, and it makes me smile,” Samantha said.

Samantha’s experience highlights three key aspects of APM’s support when working with DES participants to prepare them for work.

  1. Personalised support is key

Samantha’s approach is all about understanding each person’s needs. She takes the time to get to know her clients, recognising that what works for one person may not work for another. This personalised support is crucial in helping participants succeed.

  1. Building confidence

Many people who come to APM Employment Services have faced significant barriers to employment. APM’s team of consultants understand their role is not just about finding jobs but also about building confidence.

Through activities and consistent support, they help people regain the confidence they need to pursue their goals.

  1. Long-term success

Samantha’s story highlights the importance of focusing on long-term success for both the participant and the employer.

She doesn’t just place people in jobs - she ensures they have the support they and their employer need to thrive.

This includes preparing them for work before they find a job and providing ongoing support when they start working.

For employers looking to hire people with disability, Samantha’s experience is a reminder of the incredible potential that lies in every person.

With the right support, people with a disability, injury or health condition can excel in the workplace, bringing unique perspectives and talents to their roles.

And if you’re considering a career with APM, Samantha’s story shows the rewarding impact you can have in helping others achieve their goals. Check out the latest opportunities to join APM Employment Services at careers.apm.net.au
