Calum’s journey from setback to success

Calum, a dedicated and experienced Excavator Operator, faced a challenging period when he became unemployed after 14 years in his field.

Completely deaf in both ears, Calum reached out to APM Employment Services for assistance, determined to re-enter the workforce and continue doing what he loves.

Despite his extensive experience, Calum’s job search had been tough, and he was worried about his financial stability.

However, with the support of his APM Employment Consultant, Calum’s journey took a positive turn through Disability Employment Services.

As part of Calum’s job plan, his consultant reached out to various companies on his behalf and advocated for his skills and dedication.

Within a few months Calum’s hard work and perseverance paid off when he secured a role with Casabene Group as an Excavator Operator.

APM helped the employer access a wage subsidy to support his employment, and Calum quickly adapted to his new role, setting up his excavator to ensure everyone was aware of his deafness.

Employment is crucial for health and wellbeing, providing not just financial stability but also a sense of purpose, confidence, and community.

Calum’s new employer, Casabene Group, has been incredibly supportive, implementing Deaf Awareness sessions to help staff understand Calum’s needs and improve communication.

The company even shared a welcoming post on social media, which received over 1,000 likes, highlighting their pride in having Calum on their team.

In Australia, about 3.6 million people have some level of hearing loss, with one in six Australians currently affected

This number is expected to rise to one in four by 2050, making programs like DES even more vital.

Calum is now thriving in his role and is grateful for the support he received from APM.

“APM and Geordi recently helped me with technology for my excavator as I need cameras for safety on site. They have been greatly supportive,” Calum shared.

Calum’s story highlights the value of hard work, commitment, and the positive impact of APM Employment Services in helping people overcome adversity and achieve their employment goals.

Congratulations, Calum, on your well-deserved success!
