Matthew rises to the challenge

After being unemployed since 2006, Matthew faced not only the challenges of congenital spina bifida but also the weight of anxiety and depression.

His confidence was at an all-time low, and the path to employment seemed like an insurmountable mountain.

But Matthew didn’t give up.

He took a brave step forward, joining the Disability Employment Services (DES) program at APM Hobart.

With the unwavering support of his employment consultant, John, he began to rebuild his confidence and set his sights on a brighter future.

APM provided holistic support, including access to local health services to help Matthew manage his mental health.

Matthew was determined to find a job with a supportive employer who understood his unique needs.

Armed with a driver’s licence and a car, he was ready to explore new opportunities.

When APM introduced Matthew to Acrodata Tasmania for a role as a Document Processing Operator, the company quickly arranged a meet and greet with Matthew and John.

Matthew was open about his disability and the support he required, and Acrodata welcomed him with open arms, offering two four-hour shifts to help him transition smoothly into the workforce.

Employer benefits

As part of the DES support, John was there every step of the way, assisting Matthew with employment paperwork and securing a wage subsidy and a reimbursed paid trial period for his employer.

Despite his initial nerves, Matthew’s first day was a triumph, and he found joy in his new role.

APM ensured he received regular post-placement support, both over the phone and in person.

But the journey didn’t stop there. When Matthew experienced discomfort in his shoulders and back, APM sprang into action.

Ongoing support

A workplace assessment was conducted with their Job Access assessor, the APM team, and Acrodata’s team leader, Alex.

Together, they adjusted Matthew’s workstation and coached him on taking breaks to manage his physical health.

Within weeks Matthew had become an integral part of the Acrodata team.

His team leader, Alex, couldn’t be more impressed, saying, “APM brought Matthew to us when we needed more staff. Hearing Matthew’s story and seeing his positive outlook and drive to perform at his best, we were thrilled to welcome him.

“Matthew has adapted brilliantly, and his performance has been outstanding.”

Matthew’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination and the right support.

APM’s Disability Employment Services program not only helped Matthew achieve his employment goals but also highlighted the incredible benefits of disability inclusion for businesses and the community.

Employers who partner with APM gain access to a dedicated support system throughout the hiring process and beyond, ensuring a smooth transition and ongoing success for their employees.
