Why employers hire people with disability transcript
Shannon Fitzgerald: Alex fits really well with the job as a support worker because he has a really friendly, smiley disposition about him. Alex takes our clients out who have disabilities themselves to engage in their community as a social support. This includes people who are in wheelchairs, people who may not be confident to go into the community themselves, and he supports them to be able to do that. At the beginning, he was a little bit more quiet, a little bit more shy, but as he has become more confident in his role, he's definitely come out of his shell.
Working with APM, finding a match for people for our role was actually quite simple. They really go across everything that that client is able to do to make sure that they're suitable to send over to us first. Putting someone with a disability helping others with a disability is a really empowering thing. There's been clients who their family members were a little bit apprehensive at first, but through working with Alex to actually see how fantastic he is with their clients, it gives renewed hope for what their own family are able to achieve.
Hayley Hogan: The process has been very simple working with APM. There's lots of different diverse roles in every company, and I think that there's a lot of opportunities out there. We reached out to them with a definition of the tasks and the sort of person that we were looking for. They then got in touch with us, said they had a candidate, brought Louis in, and he started pretty much straight after that. They do a fantastic job matching the right people to the right sorts of jobs. I think it's very rewarding. It's important to make sure that we're contributing to society and making sure that we are giving everybody an equal chance to fill these roles and to feel a part of the team and part of the community.
Glen Parsons: We had some staffing issues, and we were looking for people for all areas of the business, from front of the house to back of the house. We approached APM, and I spoke with [Kerrilee 00:01:51], and we went from there. From the initial consultancy we had with APM, we found them very easy to work with. They gave us suggestions. We told them what we were looking for, and they provided a list of candidates that they believed would be suitable for the job. The first person that we actually got, we hired. So yeah, it was very easy. Tammy is responsible for the cleanliness of the premises. She was told a couple of times how to do it. We went through the training with her. We gave her the essential equipment she needed to do the job, and yeah, she's been great. We haven't had a problem since. She's very friendly. She's very approachable and easy to work with. What Tammy brings to the table we couldn't find in other staff. So, she's been a great benefit to our business. If you get the right person for the right job, they can do the job at hand.
