Taylor’s resilience was the key to his success
Despite some of the most challenging job market conditions, especially in a rural town - there have been several success stories for people living with disability.
And Taylor is one of them.
In January 2020 Taylor approached APM looking for assistance finding work in his local area of Singleton (NSW), located about two hours north-west of Sydney.
Taylor lives with a moderate intellectual disability. He was recommended to approach APM after speaking with a local community-minded business who had previously engaged with APM.
From the beginning, Taylor’s willingness to participate in the program and engage in face-to-face marketing activities was infectious.
Just prior to lockdown early in 2020, he had secured two job interviews. But due to the closure and shutdown of many businesses in his community, he was unfortunately unsuccessful in obtaining work due to this downturn in business.
After the eventual easing of restrictions, and businesses ramping back up in the local area, Taylor and his Employment Consultant Nadine were able to safely resume face-to-face marketing.
“Working with Taylor is inspirational, his enthusiasm and motivation to look for work never wavered during the pandemic” Nadine said.
Taylor is well-known in his local community. He attends local NDIS provider Sunnyfield for social supports and independent living skills. He enjoys participating in the cooking group, loves technology and a shopping trip to EB games!
Members of the Sunnyfield group have been great cheerleaders for Taylor, especially Support Worker Tash.
Taylor and Nadine returned to the workplace who recommended APM, and Taylor was offered a position on the spot. He started in his role as Kitchen Hand at the Albion Hotel in Singleton a week later.
Since then, Taylor has been enjoying his new workplace stating, “this is my best job ever!”
Taylor’s attitude has left a lasting impression with Nadine “the absolute joy and pride Taylor has with his new job continues to inspire me on a daily basis.”
His employer at the Albion appreciates his enthusiasm for work, noting that Taylor’s enthusiasm is rubbing off on some of his pre-existing staff members.
