Darren first arrived at APM’s Devonport team for support to find a job working with cars.
Sharing his interests with his APM employment consultant Laura, Darren ideally wanted to work with cars, either mechanically or with tyres.
However, without a driver’s licence, Darren quickly found these roles were not feasible, so he worked with Laura to explore alternative opportunities that would closely match his interests.
Darren, who lives with cerebral palsy, accessed support in searching for a suitable job through Disability Employment Services with APM.
As part of the free program he was able to spend time with Laura to set up a plan to find the right opportunity. He also became more confident and overcame his initial shyness with the APM team.
Seeing a potential opportunity, Laura approached Launceston City Mission to see if there were any roles for Darren at their Resale Centre at Wynyard Waste.
After learning about Darren's situation, Manager Greg was eager to meet him.
Following his preparation and support from Laura, Darren’s interview was a success, and he passed his pre-employment medical with flying colours.
He was offered the position of Resale Centre Attendant.
APM’s support continued to ensure Darren was ready for his first day with new work clothing and shoes.
Darren was thrilled and even wore his new shoes around the house to break them in.
Since starting his job, which involves sorting vehicle parts and engine material, Darren has thrived, his confidence has soared, and he has become an integral part of the team.
Darren's story has even been featured in the local media: Dazza the Great at Wynyard Waste Transfer Station - The Advocate
Beau, Darren’s disability support worker, has seen a remarkable change in Darren's confidence and pride.
The local community has noticed too. People regularly comment on the improved presentation and tidiness of the waste station since Darren started.
Darren jokes with Laura, "Thank you, I’m now famous," as he enjoys his newfound popularity with colleagues and the community alike.
Darren’s story is a shining example of how the right support and opportunities can lead to personal growth and fulfilment.
APM is delighted to have played a part in his journey to independence and employment success.
