Jeff always wanted a job where he could help make a positive difference in other people’s lives.
After dropping out of school in grade 6, and as a person with dyslexia, Jeff believed he would only be capable of labour intensive roles.
But years of heavy lifting and physically demanding work eventually took their toll on Jeff’s health and a spinal disorder left the 63-year-old unable to carry on working.
With no employment and unsure of what to do to keep earning money, Jeff found his way to APM Employment Services in Wynnum.
The team recognised Jeff’s desire to work in a role helping other people and started the process to help him achieve his goals.
After his initial appointment and assessment to determine he was capable of working non-labouring roles, the APM team organised Jeff’s enrolment in a Certificate IV Ageing Support course.
Jeff told the team the belief they had in his abilities to do the course alone was a huge boost to his confidence and motivation to succeed.
As he started the course Jeff raised concerns about the workload and the impact of his dyslexia on his ability to complete the requirements.
But with support from his APM team, which included research, typing and practical help with studying, Jeff was able to keep going.
As he reached 13 weeks in the course, Jeff found more support from the team as he had to secure a work placement.
As well as several interviews and opportunities, a discussion with Star Community Care lead to a job offer as an Aged/Community Support Officer, before Jeff had even completed his course.
Keen to give Jeff everything he needed to grasp the interview, APM helped him access funds for workwear clothing a Blue/Yellow Card training, a police check and a first aid certificate. Jeff also had support for vehicle and fuel costs so he could get to and from his new job.
The support from APM gave Jeff and his employer a strong start together.
After five months Jeff said he is enjoying the change in work in a dream job and he now has regular aged care clients requesting his support.
