Ben and Grainger's perfect role

Just a year ago, Ben's future seemed uncertain. Diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that affected his vision at 23, he wondered what he could do as a blind person.

However, his determination and the support of his community have helped him overcome these obstacles and find a fulfilling career.

"It was really hard," Ben said. "I was down on myself, wondering what I could do as a blind person."

Despite these challenges, Ben's determination never wavered.

With support from APM Employment Services, he secured a position as a Safety Support Officer at Clarence Valley Council, a role that perfectly matched his skills and aspirations.

This opportunity marked a significant turning point in Ben's life, allowing him to regain his confidence and sense of purpose.

Central to Ben's success has been his guide dog, Grainger.

More than just a helper, Grainger has become a beloved member of the workplace, known for his cheeky personality and the joy he brings to everyone he meets.

"Grainger lights up the place," Ben says with a smile.

The bond between Ben and Grainger is evident, and their partnership has been instrumental in Ben's journey.

Ben's colleagues at Clarence Valley Council have been incredibly supportive, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment.

"Since Ben's been working with us, he's been fantastic," says Sarah, a colleague.

The council's commitment to inclusivity has made a significant impact on Ben's confidence and professional growth.

As well as helping Ben find the right job, APM Employment Services worked with Ben and his employer to access several workplace modifications so he could perform his work with confidence.

These included assistive technologies such as screen readers and braille displays, which enabled Ben to navigate his tasks with ease.

These modifications were crucial in creating an inclusive environment where Ben could thrive.

Inspiring others

Ben’s employer, John, encourages others to hire people with disability.

"Look at their ability, look at their skills. Everyone has something to offer to a workplace," he says.

With Grainger by his side and the unwavering support of APM and his employer, Ben's future is looking bright.

His journey is a reminder that with the right support, anything is possible.
