Gregory's skills make him a vital helping hand

Gregory had a long and successful career, but after over 40 years in the workforce, he had to leave his job due to bilateral rotator cuff tears in his shoulder.

At 63 years old, Gregory faced the daunting task of re-entering the workforce.

His age, physical limitations, and a long gap in employment made him feel uncertain and unmotivated.

Then he came to APM Employment Services in Mackay and met his employment consultant Sovana.

APM EC Sovana and Disability Employment Services participant Gregory

Working closely with Gregory to understand his situation, Sovana guided the mature worker through the Disability Employment Services program.

Together, they identified Gregory's strengths and updated his resume before Sovana reached out to local employers in Mackay, and promoted his skills and experience.

When a trades assistant position became available, Sovana referred Gregory for the role at Chris Vella Plumbing & Gasfitting.

The company was known for its supportive culture and when Gregory was invited to discuss the position, he confidently cleared the interview and secured the role.

Today Gregory is thriving in his job.

He loves helping others and solving problems, and he has developed a productive daily routine that benefits both his personal and professional life.

His employer praises his work ethic and has even offered him additional hours whenever he is up for it.

As part of the DES program, Gregory continues to receive support from APM and has become a welcome visitor to the APM Mackay team.

“It has been a joy to watch him rediscover his potential,” said Sovana.

And Gregory praises the team who helped him.

"I’m so grateful for your guidance and encouragement in helping me find the right opportunity. Thank you for everything," he said.

Gregory's story highlights the benefits of APM's inclusive employment services for people who need support adapting to change and achieve new goals.
