Terry's back on the road

Terry had been out of work for over a year and managing a spinal disorder when he first came to APM Employment Services.

Despite solid experience in pathology collection and the transport industry, Terry felt that his age was making it hard to find a job.

During his first appointment at the Palmerston branch, Terry told APM employment consultant Kenya that he was worried about finding work again.

Kenya wasted no time reassuring Terry she was there to help and together, they made a plan to get him back into the workforce.

Kenya from APM and Terry

Over the next few weeks, Kenya helped Terry update his resume, fill out job applications, and practise for interviews.

When Terry came to the APM office to announce he had landed a truck driver job with a local Darwin transport company, Kenya and the whole team was thrilled.

But their support didn’t end there.

To start his new job, Terry needed a Traffic History Check and help to buy the necessary uniform and safety gear.

Kenya arranged for APM to cover these costs and helped Terry complete his onboarding documents.

Terry started his new job a few weeks later and quickly settled into a good routine.

He loved his new work environment and found his colleagues to be very supportive, even though he didn't enjoy getting caught in the rain during deliveries.

Over the next several months, Kenya continued to support Terry, helping him with any issues that came up.

When Terry experienced pain in his ankles and needed to see a podiatrist, APM covered the cost of the appointment and the orthotics he needed.

Today Terry will soon celebrate 52 weeks of employment.

He regularly visits the APM office with a big smile on his face and his employer recently told Kenya they are very impressed with Terry's work ethic and love having him on the team.

Terry's story shows the benefits of personalised support through Disability Employment Services that is available for both job seekers and employers.
