Ian finds his stride with inclusive employment that fits

Ian always wanted to work, but finding the right job wasn’t easy.

Living with an intellectual disability and managing multiple diagnoses meant he faced barriers that kept him out of the workforce for years.

That changed when Ian connected with the team at APM Booval in Ipswich.

Ian’s first job as a stable hand gave him confidence and independence. See how APM helped him succeed.

With support from APM Employment Consultant Tayla, Ian was able to prepare and find a meaningful new job.

He began as a stable hand with H4C Pty Ltd – an employer dedicated to supporting people on the Disability Support Pension.

Working with racehorses turned out to be the perfect fit for Ian.

The role was tailored to his needs, with regular breaks, wellbeing check-ins, and a supportive team environment. These adjustments helped Ian feel confident and connected at work.

Meanwhile, Tayla stayed by Ian’s side, visiting him at the stables for face-to-face appointments and offering ongoing support.

Ian’s employer Mick welcomed this approach, knowing it helped Ian thrive in his role.

Since starting work, Ian has grown more independent.

He now manages tasks like reporting his income – something he had never done before. He enjoys the job, the team, and the sense of belonging that comes with it.

Reflecting on his journey, Ian said: “Since joining APM and starting work I feel more independent and less reliant on outside supports.

“Tayla has showed me how to report my income which I didn't know before as I'd never had a job.

“APM makes me feel so welcome and has been so supportive, not just Tayla but the entire Booval APM.”

Ian’s confidence continues to grow. He’s earned his learner’s permit and is excited about driving in the future.

With several months of employment under his belt, Ian is happy in his role and ready for what’s next.
