Adam on changing lives with employment

For Adam, working at APM isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to change lives.

Every day, he connects with people facing barriers to employment, helping them find not just work, but confidence and direction.

One of those people was Geoff.

“I love connecting with candidates from day one,” Adam said.

“And then supporting them and touching base with them while they're in employment as well and seeing them improve. It's a massive thrill.”

Geoff came to APM after being let go from his previous job. He was stressed and struggling with motivation.

“So basically you just want to identify that, get him into branch as quick as possible so we can support him,” Adam explained.

Adam worked closely with Geoff to understand his goals, interests, and lifestyle.

“I had the one-on-one consulting to be able to work out where he was, have a job plan about our future, plan about his goals, looking at his hobbies and look at his lifestyle, about how we can kind of put that in with employment opportunities.”

Geoff lives with an intellectual disability, which meant traditional roles involving reading, numbers, or cashier work weren’t a good fit.

“So we had to look at some stuff where he could use his hands or use his physical attributes and that's what we've done.”

That led to a role at South Pacific Laundry, where Geoff now works in production—sorting linen and preparing large laundry bags for dispatch.

“He is doing some production work, some linen sorting,” Adam said.

“Basically linen comes through in a production line and he sorts it out… make sure that they're all stacked up and getting ready for dispatch.”

Adam’s support didn’t stop at job placement.

“It can be, you know, employment assistance, it can be upskilling training, it can be social work appointments, healthcare appointments,” he said.

“There’s a lot of things that we can support our candidates with to better ensure that they're having a better life.”

Years later, Adam still keeps in touch with many of the people he’s helped.

“I still keep in contact with a lot of candidates and candidates’ parents and things like that, or family members that I've helped… I've built that connection with from, you know, five years ago in APM.”

For Adam, the reward is simple: “It's really rewarding.”
