Early support for Clare turned into a passionate career supporting others

Clare learned firsthand the advantages of having people around you who can offer their guidance and support.

Her mother, and one of her teachers, advocated for Clare at school, keeping her on-track and motivated to work hard.

“And that's why I actually came into this industry, it’s because I wanted to advocate for those that couldn't do it for themselves.”

Thanks to that encouragement, and her dedication to studying hardClare was successful in her schooling and is now a Business Manager at APM in Collie — managing two sites in the WA’s South West region, one in Collie, and the other in Manjimup.

Clare also understands that not everything you need to know can be taught.

It takes a compassionate attitude and the right kind of emotional capacity as well, when it comes to helping people.

The admin stuff can be taught. The language can be taught. You need to have empathy for the people that we're working with because they don't all have the same things that we have. They don't have the family support - they don't have a car.

Clare believes all people deserve support, no matter how they identifyAnd is appreciative to work in such a supporting environment.

My family are First Nations, but mIndigenous identity doesn't come into play within my role. Yes, it does break the ice for clients, however, at the end of the day we're all still people.

My leaders have been supportive. I will say that. And I am very, very grateful for the fact that they are. And knowing that they have your back is amazing.

An upbeat and inclusive approach to managing her team, makes for a great work culture.

The vibe here is really good. It's a positive team. I always want my team to feel included. Yes, we are employees, but we're also part of a bigger family.

Clare’s also encouraging of other Indigenous people who might be thinking about doing similar work.

My advice to an Indigenous person wanting to join APMDo it. Be the change. Have a crack. You'll be surprised.

Some days are big wins, like helping a family into a house, and some wins are smaller, like getting someone’s driver’s license back — but for Clare, any day with a win, is a good day.

That's what we're here forIf I could change one person's life a day or even a week, I know I'm doing my job.
