Recognising National Reconciliation Week

APM's Reconciliation Action Plan outlines a vision to foster a deeper cultural understanding of the place in Australian history that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people hold.

"The range of events being held by APM offices throughout the country signifies our commitment to collaborating with and understanding the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to Australia," said APM Group Chief Executive Officer, Michael Hobday.

"Throughout National Reconciliation week, staff are taking part in events to broaden their understanding of the history and significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people which will better inform their work in enabling better lives."

Events which are being coordinated by APM offices include (or have included) screenings of educational presentations about Indigenous reconciliation, staging 'Welcome to Country' ceremonies, raising awareness through Indigenous artwork and music and an address to local staff from an Indigenous client.

APM's current Reconciliation Action Plan for 2014 and 2015 is the second to be formulated in company history.

"In particular, it aims to leverage our position as the largest provider of disability employment services to work to improve employment, health and social outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families and communities," Mr Hobday said.

APM's first Reconciliation Action Plan was developed in 2011.

Achievements from the first plan include increasing the level of employees who are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds to 2 per cent and the introduction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training becoming a mandatory component of the APM induction program.
