Bailey and Everyday Independence

Ainsley gets the help she needs to support her son Bailey

Six-year-old Bailey is a bundle of energy and joy, but some of his behaviours and development issues were becoming overwhelming for his mum, Ainsley.

Ainsley remembers, “We didn’t understand why he was having all these meltdowns. And we couldn’t understand his speech. It made me feel defeated. Like I couldn’t do anything about it. I didn’t know what to do about it or get support from.”

Two years ago, they met Keren, an Early Childhood Key Worker from Everyday Independence.

An Everyday Independence Key Workers work closely with families to plan and deliver early childhood supports (early childhood intervention services) to help children develop their skills to participate more in everyday life.

They support families holistically, working with the child, family and their wider supports, whether it be at home, kindergarten, school or any setting where the child is experiencing challenges.

With Bailey, they’ve taken a team approach, supporting his attendance at school and attending meetings with Ainsley to help her in the capacity-building role.

A physiotherapist and OT are supporting the development of his gross fine and core motor skills.

At the same time, a speech pathologist is working on his social communication and articulation.

It’s just as important to work with the families as it is with the child.

Keren says, “It’s really wonderful when someone can partner with the parent and just give them that little bit of extra support that they need. I can see that Ainsley is confident and has really developed in the ways that she can manage Bailey’s behaviour. She’s learned a lot of strategies and a lot just of understanding about how Bailey’s brain works, which has been really fantastic to see.”

Keren has made the world of difference to Ainsley and Bailey, “I love her support and advice that she offers me and Bailey. She’s very understanding. She will offer me any support and advice if I’m stuck on something. I feel very, very positive about Bailey’s future with all support that he has around him with Everyday Independence.
