Food and hospitality employers need most staff

The latest insights from Australian employers suggests 20 per cent are expected to hire new staff over the next three months.

More employers in the Accommodation and Food Services say they expect to recruit new employees than any other industry.

Meanwhile half of employers in Australia are struggling to find the staff they need, according to the National Skills Commission, Recruitment Insights Report for June 2021.

The latest report reveals key insights for job seekers and businesses over winter and into start of spring. These include:

  • 49% of employers were recruiting or had recruited in the past month
  • Employers in the Accommodation and Food Services industry remain the most likely to expect to hire new staff over the next three months
  • 50% of employers are still finding it difficult to find staff

Connecting job seekers to employers

The National Skills Commission surveys employers to learn about their recruitment needs and to better connect job seekers with employment opportunities.

Insights from employers help job seekers understand what employers are looking for.

According to the June update, job seekers could find more vacancies in businesses such as:

  • Accommodation
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • Takeaway food services
  • Clubs (hospitality)
  • Pubs, taverns and bars

Up to 70% of Takeaway Food Services employers surveyed said they expect to hire new staff in the coming weeks.

Other industries expected to hire more staff across July, August and September include:

  • Manufacturing
  • Professional, scientific and technical services
  • Health care and social assistance
  • Construction
  • Wholesale trade
  • Retail trade

Struggling to find staff

Meanwhile half of all employers surveyed said they still had trouble recruiting job seekers.

The biggest issue was simply a lack of applicants according to 43% of employers.

According to the survey in June, 'blue collar' occupations - including technicians and trades workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers – were the most difficult to recruit for.
