When Kasandra first connected with APM Cannington for employment support, she had been out of work for a long time.
Recovering from a traumatic period in her life, everyday tasks felt overwhelming. The thought of attending a job interview felt far beyond reach.
Through the Inclusive Employment Australia program - previously known as Disability Employment Services - Kasandra was supported to face her barriers gradually and in a way that felt right for her.
At the beginning of her journey, Kasandra found it difficult to attend appointments in person. Her APM employment consultant took a trauma‑informed approach, moving at a pace that felt safe and manageable.
They listened carefully, encouraged her progress, and celebrated every small step forward.
That consistent, personalised support helped Kasandra begin rebuilding trust in herself and her abilities.
Building skills, step by step
To support her mental health, Kasandra began counselling and joined the Essential Life Skills Activity Pack with training partner Alffie.
The program focused on practical, everyday skills that helped her feel more confident and capable.
Between appointments, Kasandra completed short tasks designed to strengthen her communication and social confidence. Over time, those small efforts added up.
Soon, Kasandra felt comfortable speaking more openly. She began attending morning teas at the APM office and sharing ideas during group feedback sessions.
Steps that once felt intimidating became part of her routine.
With growing confidence, her consultant also supported her to build job‑ready skills.
Kasandra completed a First Aid course, learned to travel independently to training, and renewed her Working with Children Check.
A role with purpose
When an APM employer account manager identified a bus aide opportunity with KaGo Transport Services, it was the right moment for Kasandra to take her next step.
On interview day, her consultant travelled with her to provide reassurance and support.
When Kasandra was offered a work trial, her strong work ethic quickly stood out. Before long, she was offered the role.
Now settled into her new routine, Kasandra continues to receive ongoing support from APM as she thrives in her position.
She says she never imagined she would return to work, let alone find a job she genuinely enjoys.
“I would like to express my gratitude for all the help I’ve received,” Kasandra said.
“All staff are amazing, and I am so happy that I have APM on this journey with me.”
Kasandra also praised her employment consultant’s understanding, patience, professionalism and dedication.
“She helped me get back on track. I’m extremely grateful that APM came into my life.”
