Retail and receptionist jobs top in-demand list

Receptionist jobs are in demand in Australia

Retail assistants and receptionists are among the most in-demand job roles currently available in Australia, latest employer figures show.

Managers, child carers and delivery drivers are also in high demand, according to the latest Jobs in Demand Employer Survey, released this week.

More than 20 per cent of employers surveyed are currently looking to hire new employees.

The figures, taken from surveys carried out from July 6 to July 31, come as unemployment levels rise in most states and territories across Australia due to the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

A survey carried out in June ranked child carers as the most in-demand job ahead of retail assistants and receptionists.

Delivery drivers is the highest ranked new role on the list. Box and container packers is also high in demand compared to the previous survey.

Employer in a warehouse

The Australian Government’s National Skills Commission carried out the survey of 1600 employers in industries likely to be experiencing a high demand for goods and services.

Five industries were targeted in the research - Health Care and Social Assistance; Transport, Postal and Warehousing; Manufacturing; Retail Trade; and Wholesale Trade.

Across the businesses of the 1600 employers who took part in the survey, there were 1170 vacant positions.

When asked what difficulties they face with hiring new workers, employers said the three biggest challenges were a lack of experience, the impact of COVID-19 and a lack of applicants.

When asked about the skills and qualifications needed to fill the roles, the survey revealed most roles required no formal qualifications.

Around 15% needed a Certificate III qualification and less than 10% needed a driver’s licence.
