Finding balance

Siri struggled to find a role which accommodated her responsibilities as a single parent.

Having previously worked in Accounting and administration, she wanted to assess her options.

ParentsNext is an Australian government program delivered by APM in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.

The program is aimed at supporting parents with young children to reach their employment goals while balancing their family commitments.

Through the ParentsNext program, she was able to access study opportunities which have put her on a new path to success.

Empowered through employment

When her previous line of work wasn’t accommodating her and her daughter, Siri decided she needed to make a change.

“I feel it’s important I changed that, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do” Siri said.

When she reached out to APM for support, her Parents Next Parent and Family Pathway Planner got her looking at different courses and study options.

Since beginning her studies, Siri has been feeling more positive.

“Now I’m achieving my goals, I’ve been studying for almost 12 months” she said.

Through her studies, she undertook a work experience placement at her daughter’s school and was offered ongoing employment there.

When asked what advice she would offer to other people thinking about the ParentsNext program, Siri highlighted self-belief as important.

“I’d just like to actually tell them they can do it – if they believe that they can do it, then they can do it” she said.

“Now I couldn’t be happier, I am really grateful for APM introducing the program to me.”
