Malvern teens bring beach to the elderly

A group of 16 and 17 year olds from Malvern have spent their summer holidays bringing the beach to elderly people at one of the town's care homes.

The project involved the transformation of a dull fence into a vibrant beach scene for residents of Court House Nursing Home in Barnards Green to look at.

The young people who were taking part in the National Citizen Service Programme (NCS), were tasked with devising and delivering a social action project in their region.

The culmination of a month long series of activities as part of NCS, the group made it their mission to support the elderly of Malvern in any way possible.

Vivian Yeung is a local University student, who has helped to deliver this summer's programme as an NCS senior mentor.

"The group were all very keen to support elderly people, it was something each of them were passionate about.

"They made contact with the care home and arranged to paint a very bland fence in order to make it appealing for the residents. After hours of work they finally finished and the fence was transformed!"

The group funded the purchasing of all materials through a series of activities including a sponsored walk, head shaving and leg waxing. They decided that as the elderly residents could no longer manage a trip to the coast, they would bring the coast to them by painting creating a vibrant beach scene.

By doing this they managed to raise the money needed to buy the paints. With the money in hand they decided to buy the right paints to create a vibrant beach scene.

Sophie Cooper, was one of the teenager that took part: "NCS gave me an experience of a lifetime. Making new friends, facing fears and learning vital new skills. As cheesy as it sounds, it's something I will treasure forever.

"I'd like to thank Court House for giving us the chance to make a difference and help the residents."

Delivered in the region by employment and training experts, APM, NCS is an exciting programme open to all 16 and 17-year-olds in England and Wales.

Offered during spring, summer and autumn, NCS helps young people to build skills for work and life, take on new challenges and meet new friends.
