Lynette closer to biggest goal after a sensational return to work

Lynette joined the Disability Employment Services (DES) program at APM Roma with a strong desire to re-enter the workforce.

Out of work for seven years, Lynette faced multiple challenges, including her mental health conditions and a recent surgery to remove a tumour.

However, Lynette was determined to find a job that would help her become financially secure and achieve her goal of buying her own home.

She also wanted to find flexible work that would allow her to visit her children in Toowoomba regularly.

Seeing Lynette was nervous about returning to work, APM employment consultant Emily guided her through the early stages of searching for work.

Emily helped Lynette update her resume, use the Centrelink App and encouraged her to apply for jobs in hospitality and retail, which offered the flexibility she needed.

When an opportunity to interview for a casual role with an employer who shared APM’s values of disability inclusion, Lynette didn’t hesitate to apply.

The position at McDonald’s Roma was daunting, and Emily joined Lynette for the interview with employer Richard.

But despite her nerves, Lynette's determination and positive attitude stood out and Richard was eager to give her the opportunity she needed.

Preparing for the job, Emily help Lynette obtain her identity and police clearance documents and new shoes suitable for the workplace.

As part of the Disability Employment Services program, Emily even joined Lynette on the job for her first few shifts to help her settle in and learn the requirements of the role.

After just four weeks, Lynette was offered a full-time position and the chance to undertake management training.

She eagerly accepted and continues to take on new opportunities.

Since making a flying start in her role, Lynette recently said she has been pre-approved for a home loan and even closer to her goal of becoming a homeowner.

Lynette's story shows the positive impact of getting the right support.

It also highlights the benefits of inclusive hiring practices for businesses and the community.

Employers like Richard, who support disability inclusion, not only help people like Lynette but also enrich their workplaces with diverse talents.
