Knowing what she wanted

Kylie Burke knew what she wanted to do, she just needed help to make a start.

As a parent, Kylie wasn’t sure how to manage her time and energy to progress her goals for herself while managing her time with her five-year-old.

ParentsNext is an Australian government program delivered by APM in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.

The program is aimed at supporting parents with young children to reach their employment goals while balancing their family commitments.

Her APM Parent and Family Pathway planner Kylie Underhill began with skill development, and it didn’t take Kylie Burke long to find her drive.

Blossoming with employment

Kylie Burke began her journey with an employment skills workshop at the Morella Community Centre, north of Adelaide.

It was Kylie (Burke)’s goal to become a personal trainer.

“I told Kylie (Underhill) what I was aiming for and she sent me in the right direction” Kylie Burke said.

After getting help to update her resume and strategies to look for work, Kylie Underhill helped her enrol in a Certificate IV in Health and Fitness.

Throughout her course, Kylie Underhill describes the change she saw in Kylie Burke.

“I’ve seen Kylie blossom, she comes in confident, you could see that she’s just a totally different person.”

Kylie Burke’s hard work in her course and commitment to her ParentsNext activities, helped her secure employment a week before she was due to finish her course.

According to Kylie Burke, when she was asked by Kylie Underhill what goals she had for herself next, she couldn’t think of any.

She’d already achieved them.
