Reception, hospitality and sales jobs booming

Receptionists, clerks and call centre workers are the most in demand jobs right now in Australia.

Sales assistants, carers and hospitality workers are also in the most wanted employees according to the latest Internet Vacancy Index.

Advertising figures for March 2021 revealed a major surge in job opportunities this year as businesses recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data from the National Skills Commission shows there were around 238,700 job ads in Australia in March 2021. An increase of 38,200 from February this year, and 117,200 than the same time last year.

  • General enquiry clerks, call centre workers, and receptionists recorded the largest increase over the year - up by 9,900 job ads (120.9%).
  • Hospitality workers increased by 7,000 job ads (321.6%).
  • Sales assistants and salespersons increased by 6,800 job ads (132.2%).

Across Australia, job ads increased in all states and territories over the year to March 2021.

Tasmania recorded the strongest increase in recruitment activity over the year (up by 179.6% or 1,900 ads). 

Future job predictions

The latest Industry Employment Projections from the National Skills Commission suggests employment will grow in several sectors.

The report, which gives an outlook on jobs up to November 2025, says four key industries will provide the most employment growth:

  • Health care and social assistance
  • Accommodation and food services
  • Professional, scientific and technical services
  • Education and training
