Gary perseveres to find the perfect job with Disability Employment Services
Gary, a proud South Australian father and grandfather, found his life turned upside down by serious health issues and depression.
Having enjoyed a career in the caravan industry, Gary became unemployed and was out of work for more than three years.
Living in a van following a relationship breakdown, Gary’s self-esteem and confidence were very low when he connected with APM Employment Services.
Employment consultant Eleanor, quickly saw Gary’s potential and helped him on the path to realising he had useful skills to employers and began the process of rebuilding his confidence through Disability Employment Services (DES).
She arranged interviews and supported him through searching for jobs that were a right fit. Leading to a perfect opportunity at Goolwa Caravan Centre.
“Once it was to do with caravans, I was just, ‘That's it! This is me all over’,” Gary said.
His renewed enthusiasm and self-belief led to a position where Gary now greets customers with a smile and assists with sales and reception.
His colleagues praise his cheerful attitude and excellent customer service.
And APM’s support didn’t end with Gary’s new job. Eleanor was also able to help Gary get support to settle into a new home and buy basic appliances including a kettle and washing machine.
Reflecting on his journey, Gary feels rejuvenated. “Sleeping in a real bed again was incredible,” he said.
“It’s been hard. To be back in the workforce again... it’s great.”
