APM named Employer of Choice

APM has been named Employer of Choice at this year’s Blind Australian of the Year Awards.

APM has been recognised at the national annual awards ceremony for the inclusive hiring process and support given to blind and low-vision employees.

The awards, facilitated by Link Vision Ltd, recognise people and organisations across Australia who promote disability inclusion and improve the lives of blind people.

Rising tennis sensation Courtney Webeck was named 2024’s Blind Australian of the Year at the recent awards ceremony in Brisbane.

Courtney has become a national champion of blind and low-vision tennis since joining the sport two years ago.

APM won the Employer of Choice Award following a nomination by 2022 Blind Australian of the Year Callum Hooley, who is now a Team Leader for APM Communities in the Northern Territory.

Callum nominated APM to highlight the hiring process, training, and support he received in starting his role, which involves helping other people with disability access NDIS and local community support services.

“I myself can attest that slight nuances to the wording and structure of their approach to hiring made me feel much more comfortable that my condition would be accepted, and I would be given the opportunity to develop where needed,” Callum said.

“It was also comforting to be told at my interview that they ‘were already working with other vision impaired employees, we’ll get you what you need and you’ll be great’.”

The Employer of Choice Award also comes after Callum highlighted APM’s success in establishing an internal Disability Reference Group to support and improve the working experiences for employees and the services they provide to clients with disability.

“This group is open to employees who have disability and provides a space for us to have a voice in the company and have it heard with priority. It’s a welcome development with it not always being easy to cut through the noise in large organisations,” Callum said.
