Jake's job success

Living in Scone, a small town in New South Wales, Australia, Jake faced limited job opportunities.

Scone is known for its beautiful countryside and horse breeding industry, but its rural location means fewer employment options compared to larger cities.

However, Jake, who lives with a traumatic brain injury and upper and lower limb dystonia, was determined to find work.

Jake and the APM and RSL Scone team

When he reached out to APM Employment Services in Scone, his infectious smile and positive attitude quickly made him a favourite with the team.

Kathryn, an APM employment consultant, helped Jake update his resume and prepare for job interviews as part of the Disability Employment Services program.

Jake’s health conditions limit his endurance and the use of his hands and Kathryn knew Jake needed a job with shorter shifts and frequent breaks, so she used her local connections to find the right fit.

Kathryn found an opportunity at the Scone RSL.

The club manager was impressed by Jake’s enthusiasm and offered him a job as a doorperson.

This role allowed Jake to welcome guests and assist with inquiries, using a stool to sit and take breaks as needed.

With a wage subsidy to help during training, Jake started his new job and quickly became a beloved team member at the RSL.

Patrons and staff alike praised his warm welcome and positive energy.

One regular patron even said, “Jake is the best thing to happen to Scone RSL.”

His employer agreed, noting how Jake’s smile brightens everyone’s day.

Since starting his job, Jake’s confidence has grown.

He has since moved out of his family home and into his own place, achieving his 26-week employment milestone in August 2024.

Jake’s story shows how determination and the right support can lead to incredible success.

His journey not only demonstrates potential for other DES participants, but also highlights the importance of inclusive employment practices.
