Karina finds her smile and independence

Karina always knew she wanted to help others, but for a long time, she struggled to help herself.

Living in Bundaberg and facing a long period of unemployment, Karina’s confidence had taken a hit.

Her mental health was suffering, and significant dental issues made it painful to eat and difficult to smile.

She wore a mask to every appointment, not just for health reasons, but to hide the part of herself she felt most insecure about.

Everything changed when Karina connected with APM Bundaberg Central through the Workforce Australia program.

Employment consultants Morgan and Jess took the time to understand Karina’s unique challenges.

With their support, she learned how to navigate the points-based activation system and began to see a path forward.

Karina shared her dream of working in community care, and they set up a plan to make it happen.

They enrolled her in a Certificate III in Individual Support through Strategix Training Group.

She completed the course and within a month landed a job as a Personal Care Assistant.

But the journey didn’t stop there.

Jess recognised that Karina’s dental issues were still holding her back.

With APM’s help, Karina underwent a comprehensive dental procedure that changed everything.

She could eat without pain, her health improved, and her confidence soared.

The mask came off, and Karina began chatting with everyone she met - her smile now a symbol of her transformation.

Recently Karina took another bold step by registering for an ABN and starting her own business as a Support Worker.

Self-employed for the first time, she now enjoys the flexibility to manage her own schedule and the pride of running her own business.

Karina’s found her independence, her voice, and her smile - and she’s not looking back.
