With the unwavering support of her consultant, Alyssa Congoo, and APM’s Disability Employment Services, Jacqueline discovered a new passion and embarked on a life-changing job in October 2023.
“I stopped working because of anxiety and depression… I didn’t work for four years,” Jacqueline shared.
The road was tough, especially with the initial changes in her support team. But once she started working with Alyssa, everything changed.
“She was very supportive and encouraging and she was the one that recommended that I studied,” Jacqueline said.
With Alyssa’s encouragement, Jacqueline bravely pursued a Certificate III in Individual Support and Aged Care, even though she was nervous about returning to study.
“She supported me every step of the way and it gave me the confidence to keep going,” Jacqueline recalled.
Her hard work paid off. Jacqueline obtained a blue card and became a support worker, a role that brought her immense joy and fulfillment.
“I wanted to get a semblance of my life back… work is very important to me,” she explained.
Transitioning from cooking to community care, Jacqueline found her dream job at Right at Home Far North Queensland, where she provides companionship and assistance to clients.
“My job is fantastic… I’ve gotten a purpose back in life,” Jacqueline said with pride.
Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of support. She encourages others facing mental health challenges to seek help and take that first step towards recovery.
“To other people with mental health problems, I’d say take that step and go to a service like APM for help, give them a chance because it can help you recover your life.”
