When Pat joined the Disability Employment Services (DES) program, she was facing tough times.

At APM Mackay, employment consultant Sovana was there and ready to help.

She took the time to understand Pat's challenges and build a strong connection.

And Sovana reassured Pat that APM would support her every step of the way.

Over the next few months, Sovana helped Pat update her resume and find job opportunities that suited her skills.

Pat applied for various roles, thanks to her solid work history.

Sovana also assisted Pat in getting her Blue and Yellow Cards and completing a police check.

To help Pat manage her mental health, Sovana referred her to counselling services. This comprehensive support ensured Pat was ready for work and could manage her wellbeing.

When Pat was ready, Sovana referred her to a cleaning job.

They practised interview techniques together, boosting Pat's confidence.

Pat nailed the interview and got the job!

Almost a year later, Pat is thriving in her role.

Her job allows her to balance her caring responsibilities and continue to manage her mental health.

Pat's experience shows how Disability Employment Services can change lives and the dedication of team members to give a personalised service for every participant.

Pat’s story also featured in the Mackay and Whitsunday local news.

“Don’t let anybody put you down… be strong, don’t let anyone tell you what to do. Go for what you want to achieve, follow your dreams… and be happy,” Pat told the Mackay and Whitsunday Life.

Pat said she is incredibly proud of what she has accomplished, especially in her role as a cleaner, which she loves.

She gained much of her experience in previous years helping her late-mother who worked in a motel when she was younger, and has now been in the cleaning profession for over a year.

During this time, she has met many great people and even won awards for her work.

Pat said, “I enjoy my cleaning, it gets me out and I’ve met a lot of friends along the way.”

“I’ve achieved a lot since I’ve been out of that domestic violence situation.”

She’s also deeply proud of her two children, Jessica and Bradley.

Known for her strength, courage, and big heart, Pat has earned a reputation for helping others, with those around her describing her as having a “heart of gold.”
