Silvio and WCG Services

After more than two decades in his previous career, Silvio’s life changed in an instant when a workplace accident left him with a serious eye injury. 

A piece of steel hit him in the face, damaging his eye socket and eventually affecting his vision. 

This injury ultimately forced Silvio to take a new direction that helped him find work he loves, and a life where he’s never been happier. 

Although surgery was successful, the impact on his eyesight meant he could no longer safely do the work building mills that he’d done for years. 

In his old job, he often worked at heights and spent long stretches away from home, living in hotels. 

After taking a year off to recover, Silvio knew it was time to find a new path. And that path led him to WorkBC, by WCG Services - part of APM Group in Canada. 

Silvio had always wanted to become a Class 1 driver, but when he was a young man, he had two small children. 

He needed to be at home and couldn't go through the training. 

Now, with support from Andrea at WorkBC, he had the chance to make it happen. 

Andrea says Silvio stood out for his enthusiasm and readiness to embrace change, “He was exceptional because he was so willing to explore possibilities, and he was just so willing and so eager to try something new.” 

Together, they worked through every step of the process - from medical clearances and job research to resume writing, interview preparation and computer skills. 

With the right support, Silvio completed his Class 1 course in just five weeks, well ahead of the typical seven to ten weeks. 

Today, he drives for Pepsi Cola in a role that keeps him close to home and gives him a better quality of life. 

“I’m home every night,” he says. 

“I’ve actually never been happier in my life with a job than I am with the one I have right now.” 

For Silvio, returning to WorkBC with his diploma was a proud moment. But more than that, he wanted it to inspire others.

“You can do it. You know, it may seem overwhelming, but these people will help you get through it. 

“Don't be scared, go and do it. Start your new life.”
