Darren's drive for success gets him back on the road

After more than a decade as a truck driver in Port Stephens, Darren’s life changed suddenly.

“I was working as a truck driver in Port Stephens, I had been with the company for over 10 years but due to a shortage of work I was made redundant in July 2024,” Darren shared.

Discover how APM helped Darren regain confidence and secure a recycling truck driver job through Career Transition Assistance.
He moved to Sydney hoping for a quick return to work.

“I moved to Sydney with the expectation that finding work would be relatively easy, but after sending dozens of emails containing my resume to different employers I was not even receiving so much as a return phone call.”

Months of rejection turned into years without work. Darren’s confidence dropped, and he faced an even bigger challenge - homelessness.

That’s when he joined Career Transition Assistance (CTA) with APM in Camden. CTA is designed for people aged 45 and over who want to improve their digital skills and job readiness.

It helps participants learn how to market themselves to employers and feel confident in interviews.

With support from Tammy, his APM Training Facilitator, Darren updated his resume and cover letter and practised interview techniques.

He also learned how to use online tools to connect with employers.

“Thanks to this new resume and cover letter, and using the information provided in the course material - and especially helpful advice from Tammy - I started getting calls back from employers that I was contacting,” he said.

Soon after, Darren secured a role as a recycling truck driver.

The job suits his experience and gives him the stability he was looking for.

With regular income, and new found confidence, Darren is now planning his next step - finding a permanent home.
