Using teamwork to overcome multiple barriers to employment

Team effort to champion Aboud’s skills brings success

When Aboud connected with APM he was experiencing great difficulty trying to break out of long-term unemployment.

It can be especially difficult for job seekers to know where to turn for the support they need.

Having come from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, Aboud was experiencing language and communication difficulties.

The team at APM Punchbowl (NSW) were ready to help.

He had lived experience with chronic pain and psychological/psychiatric conditions, and a limited amount of work experience.

Before meeting his Employment Consultant Deanna, Aboud had never really set goals or thought about his preferred field of work.

Working together with Deanna, Aboud worked to set some goals which included training on personal presentation for job interviews and, of course, landing a job in his local area!

Deanna set about reverse-marketing Aboud to local employers, with assistance from Business Manager Ahmed.

Using their industry knowledge and their relationships with local businesses they were able to arrange a paid work trial for Aboud as a kitchenhand.

Aboud's potential employer was initially reluctant, however after negotiations between Business Manager Ahmed and the employer, Aboud was offered part-time employment!

“I am so proud of Aboud” Deanna said. “He’s taken on so much new knowledge and has every reason to be proud of himself, too!”

The APM Punchbowl team really went above and beyond to support Aboud – who has been thriving in his new role for nearly 26 weeks!

With ongoing post-placement support from Deanna and Ahmed, both Aboud and his employer are very happy.
