Lee building a career in hospitality with Employability Skills Training

When Lee talks about his work today, the pride is obvious.

He is building a career in hospitality, doing the kind of work he always hoped for, and finding his place in a busy hotel environment.

Not long ago, Lee was navigating a very different reality.

After a period out of work, limited access to transport made job hunting difficult and steady employment felt increasingly out of reach.

With no regular income, housing became unstable and Lee moved between short term options while trying to stay focused on finding work.

During this challenging time, Lee enrolled in the Employability Skills Training program at APM Castle Hill.

The program supports people to strengthen the practical skills employers value, explore career options and build confidence for the workplace.

Like many people facing uncertainty, Lee was unsure at first whether the course would really help.

As the sessions progressed, that doubt began to lift.

With support from APM Training Facilitator Warren, Lee worked through his resume and cover letter, received clear feedback on job applications and took part in a mock interview that helped him understand what employers were really looking for.

Step by step, his confidence grew as he practiced how to present his skills and respond to interview questions.

Armed with new tools and motivation, Lee applied for roles in hospitality, an industry he had always been drawn to.

Soon after, he was contacted by the Novotel Hotel in Parramatta.

It was the first time one of his applications had been acknowledged. Using the application he developed during the course, Lee interviewed successfully and secured a trainee role.

That job marked a turning point. With stable employment, Lee was able to secure accommodation and start rebuilding different parts of his life.

He quickly found his feet at work, enjoying the routine, the team and the opportunity to learn on the job.

His commitment and positive attitude did not go unnoticed, and he was recently recognised as Employee of the Year at the hotel.

Looking ahead, Lee feels optimistic about what comes next and grateful for the support that helped him get here.

“I owe it all to the Employability Skills Training by APM,” he said.

“And especially to Warren, without his support and guidance, none of this would have been possible.”

Lee’s story is a reminder of what can happen when the right support meets ambition and opportunity.
