Mel's devotion to dogs leads to job success

Mel always loved animals, especially dogs, but she never imagined that passion could lead to a job.

When she first connected with APM Employment Services, she was 30 years old and had never worked before.

Leaving school in Grade 9, Mel faced years of challenges - little work history, declining mental health, and the belief that employment was out of reach.

Her brain tumour added another layer of doubt, making her think no employer would take the risk.

During her first conversations with her Employment Consultant at APM Logan Central, Mel shared her love for dogs.

That simple detail changed everything.

Instead of focusing on limitations, her APM team helped her explore opportunities that matched her interests.

With encouragement from the team and a wage subsidy, Mel stepped into her first job as a dog grooming assistant - a role that gave her confidence and a sense of purpose.

Since starting work, Mel’s life has transformed.

She’s proud of her achievements, socialising more, and even saving for her dream of travelling.

In her own words, “If my employer moves, I will move, and travel to wherever she moves to.”

Her employer couldn’t agree more, saying, “Mel is a great worker, taking it upon herself to help around the house, always going beyond. We are impressed at how much APM have built Mel’s confidence and skills up to this level.”

Mel is grateful for the support that helped her believe in herself and build skills without ever feeling uneasy or limited.

After a short break while her employer was on parental leave, she’s back at work and focused on learning more and growing her confidence every day.

Reflecting on her journey, APM Business Manager Troy said it best: “THIS is why we do what we do!”
