The emotional toll was heavy - her confidence took a hit, and the loss of her career contributed to the breakdown of her marriage.
As a newly single mother, Joanne was left wondering what came next.
But Joanne wasn’t ready to give up.
She had always been creative, and she began selling her artwork locally as a way to support herself and her daughter.
Taking a leap of faith, Joanne launched her own business - Gallery 103. It was a bold move, but she knew she needed help to make it work.
That’s when she turned to APM Employment Services in Canberra and joined the Self-Employment Assistance program.
With the support of her APM consultant, Suzanna, Joanne began to rebuild - not just her business skills, but her confidence too.
Suzanna helped her work through the program’s modules, build a business plan, and tackle areas she hadn’t had to think about before, like financial planning and setting long-term goals.
Joanne started small, opening a pop-up gallery at the back of a local café.
It was a humble beginning, but it gave her the space to test her ideas and connect with the community.
With Suzanna’s encouragement and guidance, she pushed through the tough moments and, in early 2024, moved into a permanent gallery space.
Since then, Gallery 103 has grown into a vibrant creative space.
Joanne has expanded her range to include practical products featuring her artwork - things like drink bottles, journals, umbrellas, and homewares.
But perhaps her proudest achievement is representing 24 local artists and selling their original works on commission.
She’s not just building a business - she’s building a community.
Joanne’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and the power of the right support at the right time.
She’s now financially independent, running a thriving business, and looking forward to what’s next.
If you or someone you know is looking for support to get back into work or start a business, Joanne’s journey is proof that it’s possible.
