Boby went from years out of work to a fresh start

Boby arrived at APM's Surry Hills office carrying a lot.

Years out of the workforce. A recent move from Adelaide that had stripped away his support network.

And the ongoing work of rebuilding his life after drug and alcohol dependency and nearly two years of rehabilitation.

Finding a job felt far away.

Boby told his APM Employment Consultant, Shreya, that everyday life felt overwhelming and that staying focused on employment goals was a real struggle.

Attending appointments consistently was hard. He needed a higher level of support, and that's exactly what he got.

Shreya took the time to understand his full picture.

She acknowledged the barriers he was facing and built a plan around what he actually needed.

Boby was interested in forklift and labouring roles, so she helped him re-enrol in his forklift licence course.

They worked on interview preparation, communication skills, and how to approach employers with confidence.

At each appointment, they submitted around five job applications together, which led to multiple interviews.

APM also provided Opal card recharges so Boby could get to those interviews, and work clothing so he could walk in feeling ready.

Clearing police checks became an obstacle along the way.

Boby's prior charges made the process harder, and some doors closed because of it.

But he kept going.

When Boby felt uncertain about calling employers directly, Shreya did it with him.

One of those calls went to Coleman Carriers Pty Ltd, made together during an appointment.

That same day, Boby was invited to an interview.

Shortly after, he was offered a role as a Removalist and started work.

Shreya stayed in touch after he started, checking in regularly to make sure he felt supported.

Boby kept the contact up too, reporting that his new team had welcomed him well.

"Shreya was warm, understanding and patient," he said.

"She helped me do what was required to get back into the workforce."

Since starting work, Boby's confidence has grown. He has a routine now, and a stronger sense of purpose to go with it.

His story is a reminder that stable employment is possible, no matter how long the road back feels.
