Daniel's determination opens roads to a new career

After more than three decades of service in the police force, Daniel never imagined he’d need a resume - let alone a complete career restart.

But when life threw him a series of devastating challenges, Daniel found strength, resilience, and a new beginning with the support of APM’s Dapto team.

Daniel’s journey took a difficult turn when a workplace injury forced him into early retirement.

At the same time, his wife was diagnosed with cancer, and Daniel became her full-time carer.

Following her passing, he faced housing insecurity and the daunting task of re-entering the workforce after years away.

“I had to stop working altogether to care for her,” Daniel told the Illawarra Mercury.

“Then, after she passed, I was told I had to leave our home because it was in her name. I had no choice but to start over.”

That’s when Daniel walked through the doors of APM Dapto for support through Workforce Australia Services.

There, he met employment consultant Crystal, who quickly became a key ally in his journey back to employment.

Crystal helped Daniel craft his very first resume, arranged work clothing, and facilitated a police check.

She also guided him through the digital and administrative hurdles of Centrelink reporting—an area Daniel admitted he struggled with.

“Crystal did everything for me,” Daniel said.

“She was fantastic. I’m not very computer literate, but she stayed on top of everything.”

Despite Daniel’s praise, Crystal humbly described herself as a “little cheerleader,” emphasising that it was Daniel’s determination that made the difference.

“Daniel had been through so much,” Crystal said.

“Our first meeting was about understanding his story and helping him see what was possible. He did the hard work - he just needed someone to believe in him.”

Just over a month after their first meeting, Daniel secured a new role as a truck driver. His gratitude was heartfelt - he brought flowers to the APM office and left a glowing review online.

“Crystal and I applied for one job with my resume, and 24 hours later, I had an interview and was hired on the spot,” he wrote.

“My feet haven’t touched the ground since. I’m so happy to be working again at my age - all thanks to Crystal.”
